* NEW WEEQUAHIC ATHLETIC FACILITY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

A few months ago, construction of the 2000-seat arena for Weequahic High School began. The facility, which is being built in Chancellor Avenue playground, will face Goldsmith Avenue. It will provide the high school with a state-of-the-art gymnasium, activity rooms, offices, and a home-court arena for the basketball teams - something they haven't had since the early 1970's. A parking area is being constructed across the street.

* NEWARK ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME 2009 INDUCTEES

On October 15th, five Weequahic High School graduates were inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame. They are: Hal Braff, 1952; Bobby Mack, 1959; Warren Bratter, 1960; Wilbur Ross, III, 1973; and Hasson Arkbubakrr, 1979.

* WEEQUAHIC ALUMNI MURAL RESTORATION PROJECT

The WHS Alumni Association has established a fund to restore the murals entitled, "The Enlightenment of Man," which are in the lobby at Weequahic High School. The murals were originally painted in 1939 by Michael Lenson as part of the government's WPA Art projects. We need to raise $50,000 as soon as possible. Please consider contributing to this worthy cause.

* ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

The first class of our Alumni Hall of Fame: Alvin Attles, 1955 (professional basketball player, coach, and executive); Sid Dorfman, 1937 (Star-Ledger journalist); Les Fein (Weequahic's legendary basketball coach); Max Herzberg (Weequahic's first Principal for 18 years); Sandra King, 1965 (journalist and news show host); Benilde Little, 1976 (award-winning author); Dr. Robert Lowenstein (distinguished faculty and chair of the WHS foreign languages department - now 100 years old); Hilda Lutzke (popular long-time WHS English teacher - now 96 years old); Seymour "Swede" Masin, 1938 (one of Weequahic greatest athletes); Dr. Victor Parsonnet, 1941 (world famous cardiologist at the Beth); Philip Roth, 1951 (Pulitzer Prize-winning author); and Ron Stone (dynamic Weequahic Principal of the current era who passed away suddenly in 2007).

* GET YOUR ALUMNI CALUMET

MISSION:

IT was not from our differences, but from the traditions that we have in common, that gave birth to the Weequahic High School Alumni Association in 1997 - a unique opportunity to bring people together - people who seemed so far apart yet who have shared something significant and precious: their lives were shaped in their Weequahic years.

GOALS:

* TO recapture the spirit and memories of Weequahic High School that were so meaningful to many of us.

* TO transcend the generational and cultural differences spanning seven decades from 1932 to the present by bringing together our graduates, teachers, administrators and friends for reunions and special events.

* TO remember and honor those Weequahic High School graduates and staff who have made important contributions to the school and our larger community.

* TO utilize the resources of our alumni to support the current students at Weequahic High School through scholarships, tutoring, mentoring, job opportunities and cultural events.
