2021 Hall of Distinction Virtual Ceremony & Fundraiser

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, our 2021 Hall of Distinction affair was held virtually. 10 distinguished alumni were inducted, They were: Dr. Herbert Wolstein, 1939; Milton Perlmutter, 1946; Edwin Goldstein, 1951; Judge Miriam Span, 1960; Dr. Stanley Herr, 1963; Margery Tabankin, 1965; Lynda Arnold-Davis, 1971; Kim Thompson-Gaddy, 1982; Principal Faheem Ellis, 1996; and Dr, Naomi Adjei, 2007. The event raised more than $60,000 for student scholarships and activities at Weequahic High School.

Historian Linda Forgash's presentation on Weequahic at NJPAC

On March 14, 2016, Linda Forgosh, the Executive Director of Jewish Historical Society of New Jersey, made a presentation at NJPAC entitled "Newark’s Jewish Frontier: Weequahic and its High School." The program was sponsored by the Newark History Society and the Women’s Association of NJPAC’s Cultural Legacy Committee.

Meredith Vieira plays secret Santa in order to gift a huge holiday surprise to Weequahic High School's assistant band director Darryl Taylor, who has been saving lives through music. Thanks to Life Is Good for their very generous donation!

Dr. Bill "Doc" Pollak, WHS 1953, interview with Barry Farber

Dr. William Bill "Doc" Pollak is a 1953 Weequahic High School graduate. He was Vice President of his class and played on the baseball and football teams. In addtion to his sucessful career as a dentist, Bill has won more than 1,000 games as pitcher at various levels of baseball. He once pitched at Yankee Stadium against MIckey Mantle and Yogi Berra. In this You Tube video, he is interviewed by Barry Farber for his "Mind Your Business" program.

Al Bubba Baker's "Shark Tank" Presentation

Recently, Al Bubba Baker, appeared with his daughter on the TV show "Shark Tank" making a presentation for financial support for his Bubba's-Q Boneless Ribs - and he was successful. The video is his pre-show presentation. Al was a 1974 Weequahic grad, a defensive lineman in the NFL, and the Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Detroit Lions in 1978. He was named to three Pro Bowls during his career. He would become known as one of the famous anchors of the "Silver Rush." He spent 13 years playing professional football, finishing his career with the Cleveland Browns in 1990.

Dr. Clement Price's "Once and Future Newark"

The award-winning and engaging Rutgers University-Newark documentary, "The Once and Future Newark (2006)," takes viewers on a tour of some of Newark’s most famous locations, selected for their broad cultural, social and historical significance. The film features a group tour hosted by the late Rutgers History Professor Clement Price, a celebrated scholar of Newark and New Jersey history. He passed away in 2014.

The Food Dude at Hobby's Deli in Newark

The San Francisco Food Dude, Jeff Kramer, returns to his homeland, the great state of New Jersey, and visits the place that formed his earliest memory of what a deli should be, Hobby's Delicatessen in Newark, NJ. Rona LaLinga Brummer, the wife of owner Sam Brummer, is a 1951 grad of Weequahic High School. Their sons, Mark and Michael, now operate the restaurant.

Philip Roth has been called "America's greatest living novelist" many times over. Roth rarely does interviews, but he invited "Sunday Morning" into his home. And that's where Rita Braver sat down with him to talk about his work, his life, and his legacy. Roth is a Jan. 1950 Weequahic grad.

Bragman's Delicatessen has been a cornerstone of Hawthorne Ave for generations. Owned by Charlie and Janet Reisner, it is now run by their son Larry. Janice is a 1947 Weequahic High School grad.
