General Statement of Duties Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, April 22, 2024.
Manages the day-to-day operations, programming and collection of an assigned public service area at an assigned location, or manages the day-to-day operations, programming and collection of the municipal law library; provides first line supervision of Library Public Services Specialists and other Library staff at an assigned location; does related work as required.
Essential Duties Henrico County Public Libraries seeks a Public Services Supervisor to lead an Information Services Department of a large area library. There is an opening in Adult Services at our Varina Area Library. This position oversees staff, reference services, readers' advisory, public computing, classes and programming, book discussions, and outreach services to library users and the local community.
This posting may be used to fill additional Public Services Supervisor positions at other locations throughout the library system. Requirements for the Adult Services Supervisor include:
- experience working with adults in a library setting
- planning and providing adult programs and outreach
- extensive knowledge of adult literature, library and information science, and customer service as it related to working in a public library setting
- experience planning and providing classes and programs for adults of all ages
- in-depth technical expertise with library equipment, applications, and software incidental to assigned duties
- ability to inspire superior performance from staff
- ability to evaluate performance and develop staff
- ability to write and speak effectively
- ability to work as part of a team
- ability to resolve difficult interactions with library users
- a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge of trends in adult services and general library service
- awareness of and ability to learn new technologies

- considerable knowledge of reference sources and materials
- ability to plan and schedule workloads
- sound supervisory skills with the ability to train, coach, mentor, and direct the work of others including the ability to effectively manage workloads and projects and to foster and maintain high morale and engagement
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with the general public
- ability to work a flexible schedule as needed
- supervisory experience is preferred
Serves on the Adult Services Committee and may service on other committees as assigned. Works closely with the supervisory team to ensure that HCPL and Henrico County standards of customer service are met and to ensure smooth operation of the facility. May act as Person in Charge in the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager.
Minimum Qualifications Master of Library Science degree and three (3) years of relevant library work experience, with two years of relevant supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Additional Information The expected hiring range will be at the lower end of the listed pay scale.

Possession of a Librarian's Certificate from the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians.
Night and weekend work is required, including Sunday hours on rotation.
