Position Overview

The Stable Hand & Herd Health Coordinator plays a critical role in maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of the equine partners at Gaitway Therapeutic Horsemanship. This position combines stable maintenance, horse care, herd health management, and the opportunity to contribute directly to our mission by supporting or leading therapeutic riding lessons. The ideal candidate will have equine experience, a strong work ethic, and a passion for working in a therapeutic setting. A willingness to learn and pursue certification as a PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Stable Hand Duties:

  • Perform daily stable chores, including cleaning stalls, replenishing bedding, and maintaining a clean barn environment.
  • Feed and water horses according to established schedules and dietary requirements.
  • Turn out and bring in horses from pastures safely, observing proper handling techniques.
  • Assist with facility upkeep, including cleaning tack, organizing feed rooms, and ensuring cleanliness of communal areas.
  • Identify and report maintenance needs for the barn, fencing, and other equipment.

Herd Health Coordination:

  • Monitor the overall health and behavior of horses, identifying potential health concerns such as injuries, lameness, or changes in appetite or demeanor.
  • Administer basic first aid to horses when needed and coordinate with veterinarians for routine and emergency care.
  • Maintain accurate health records for each horse, including vaccinations, deworming, farrier visits, and dental care.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director or Barn Manager to develop individualized care plans for horses.
  • Implement and oversee herd management practices, such as rotational grazing and pasture maintenance, to promote optimal horse health.

Program Support and Instruction:

  • Assist during therapeutic riding lessons by grooming, tacking, and handling horses as needed.
  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of the organization to clients, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Train and mentor volunteers to support horse care and stable management activities.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to teach lessons or learn to teach under the supervision of a certified instructor.
  • Pursue PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) certification within a specified timeframe (organization may provide support for training and certification).

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; equine management certification or related education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with horses in a professional setting.
  • Knowledge of equine health, behavior, and first aid.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 50 pounds and perform strenuous tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude toward working with diverse groups, including individuals with disabilities.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with therapeutic riding programs or working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with pasture management and basic facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of equine nutrition and supplementation.
  • Willingness to learn instructional techniques and work toward PATH CTRI certification.

Working Conditions:

This position requires outdoor work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. The role may involve flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to ensure the care of the horses.

Compensation and Benefits:

Pay ranges $10-12 an hour DOE
