Medication Administration Skills and Responsibilities

• Able to administer medication by oral, rectal, topical, inhalation, eye, or ear routes , under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, following standard nursing procedures and facility policies for administering medication, including but not limited to the following:
  • Maintains medication cart and ensures storage area is clean, neat , and locked when appropriate .
  • Obtains permission from a licensed nurse before administering PRN medication .
  • Performs the count of non-narcotic countable medications with a medication technician or licensed nurse at the beginning and end of shift.
  • Administers no Schedule II drugs or any sliding scale drugs .
  • Checks the supply of medications for each resident on the unit and coordinates with nursing staff for any reorder medication needs .
  • Takes vital signs , following correct procedure, including apical pulse rates .
  • Reports any significant changes in resident condition or vital signs to the Charge Nurse or Supervisor promptly .
  • Documents medication administered on MAR per facility policy and procedures .

Additional Qualifications and Attributes

• Must be comfortable working with frequent interruptions .
• Ability to work with emotionally upset residents/patients and family members .
• Can communicate effectively with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
• Has a passion for working with long-term care residents and skilled rehabilitation patients to provide excellent resident and patient care .
• Ability to work independently , with flexibility , personal integrity , and the ability to work effectively with residents/patients, personnel, and support agencies .
