Job Description & RequirementsThe Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. This includes preoperative assessment and preparation, intraoperative support in the operating room, and postoperative recovery monitoring. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes throughout the perioperative continuum.
\n\n Key Responsibilities: \nPreoperative Phase:
\nConduct patient assessments and obtain surgical histories
\nEducate patients and families on surgical procedures and post-op care
\nVerify preoperative checklists and consents
\nIntraoperative Phase:
\nAssist with patient positioning and prepping for surgery
\nMaintain a sterile field and ensure all surgical instruments are available and accounted for
\nMonitor patient vitals and advocate for patient safety during surgery
\nDocument intraoperative care accurately
\nPostoperative Phase:
\nMonitor and assess patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
\nManage pain, monitor vital signs, and observe for complications
\nCommunicate recovery plans and discharge instructions to patients and families
\nGeneral:
\nAdhere to hospital policies, infection control practices, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission)
\nParticipate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education
\nMaintain accurate nursing documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
