Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
Job Summary:
VocoVision is seeking a qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services for K12 students across Illinois public schools . This role ensures that deaf and hard of hearing students have full and equal access to instruction, communication, and participation in their virtual learning environments.
Provide real-time ASL interpretation during virtual classroom instruction, meetings, and school events.
Accurately interpret spoken communication from teachers and peers into ASL, and voice student responses as needed.
Work collaboratively with teachers, special education staff, and school administrators to support students communication needs.
Maintain confidentiality and follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct .
Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings to advise on communication access and accommodations.
Utilize secure, FERPA-compliant platforms for all interpreting sessions.
Complete required documentation, including interpreting logs and progress reports, per district or agency guidelines.
Required:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
Current or eligible Illinois Educational Interpreter License through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) .
High school diploma or GED and completion of an interpreter training program.
RID certification or equivalent qualification (e.g., EIPA score of 3.5 or higher ).
Proficiency using online platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.
Reliable high-speed internet and a professional remote workspace.
Preferred:
Prior experience interpreting in Illinois K12 educational settings .
Familiarity with ISBE regulations and terminology related to special education and deaf education.
Bachelors degree in Interpretation, Deaf Studies, Communication, or a related field .
This is a fully virtual position . Interpreters must maintain a quiet, dedicated workspace with consistent internet access. All services are provided using secure video conferencing platforms approved by VocoVision.
