Bernard "Bernie" Marcus is a pharmacist and retail entrepreneur and philanthropist. He co-founded Home Depot and was the company's first CEO; he served as Chairman of the Board until retiring in 2002. A graduate of South Side High School.

He was Newark, NJ's leading citizen from the early 1900s until his death in 1944. He founded L. Bamberger & Company. Bamberger personally funded the buildings for Newark’s YMHA, the Newark Museum, and the New Jersey Historical Society. His sister, Caroline Bamberger Fuld, gave Newark money for the cherry trees in Branch Brook Park.
