SENIOR WRITER (National Catholic Register) EWTN - Washington, DC / U.S. Remote Eligible June 17, 2024

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT THE BIG PICTURE:

Senior Writer is responsible for monitoring news, trends, and current affairs and generating story pitches, writing stories weekly, proposing and drafting editorials, participating in editorial team planning, and contributing to strategy.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Proactively pitches compelling, timely, and relevant articles and interviews, demonstrating knowledge of current events, Catholic news, and the Register’s audience. Employs creative solutions to common story problems, such as trouble reaching sources, tight deadlines, lack of art, etc. Participates in daily and weekly editorial conference calls, providing insights into potential news coverage, story angles, and updating editors on assignments. Appears regularly as a guest on Register Radio and occasionally on other EWTN radio or television news programs; responds as needed, under the direction of the editor in chief, to other media requests. Attends events to cover assignments, keep abreast of industry trends and technologies, or to represent the Register.

ABOUT YOU:

You have a minimum 7-10 years of experience in the editorial field. You are a practicing Catholic with a demonstrated understanding of the Church teachings and how it relates to the journalism goals of The Register and EWTN News. You possess relevant well-placed news sources in the U.S. Catholic Church and public policy field. You have the ability to network effectively to cultivate valuable news sources and original story leads. You have the ability to identify trends and break news (i.e. produce “scoops.”) and are familiar with National Catholic Register content and competing Catholic media outlets. You have knowledge of, and the ability to follow, standard journalistic practices, particularly accuracy, honesty, and fairness. You have strong interpersonal skills to work with sources, colleagues, readers, and other stakeholders diplomatically, as well as serve as a team leader, build professional relationships, and communicate effectively. You are flexible to travel by air periodically, domestically and/or internationally, as needed.
