The Refinery Services Manager will lead all aspects of our precious metal melt shop operations, ensuring the business unit consistently meets and exceeds company standards for operational excellence, safety, and compliance with all internal and external quality requirements. This role demands meticulous oversight of melting, fire assaying, and chemical stone removal processes, requiring a strong understanding of metallurgy and chemistry with a commitment to high precision. The Manager will drive continuous improvement, implement robust cost control measures, and champion the training and development of the melt shop team, all while rigorously safeguarding inventory integrity and minimizing process losses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and supervise all daily melt shop operations, including scheduling, heat and chemical-based melt processing and assays, data entry, and settlements.
- Lead and enforce departmental safety and security protocols, ensuring employee adherence.
- Coordinate all upstream bulk refinery shipments effectively with the logistics department.
- Maintain stringent control over inventory handling, metal accountability, and reconciliation processes, upholding a zero-loss tolerance.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety procedures, including the proper use of PPE, furnace operation standards, acid-based refining processes, and emergency protocols.
- Achieve and surpass customer service turnaround goals consistently.
- Meet or exceed all quality control and accuracy metrics in assaying and processing.
- Recruit, hire, and onboard all melt shop personnel, fostering a skilled and compliant team.
- Oversee the repair, installation, and preventive maintenance of all melt shop equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
- Establish Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) for supplies and consumables and manage the procurement of all necessary materials and equipment.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of melt technicians and support personnel, providing continuous training to enhance their skills and ensure compliance.
- Develop, maintain, and update all relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training guides, and process manuals to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Implement and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for melt yields, turnaround time, quality control, and overall process efficiency.
- Support all audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting requirements related to environmental, health, safety, and precious metal traceability.
- Investigate discrepancies and process deviations, implement effective corrective actions, and
- update SOPs as needed.
- Drive process improvements and efficiencies through the application of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
- Oversee the timely and accurate processing of each melt lot from initial scheduling through final settlement within our proprietary software tracking system.
- Ensure full compliance with all corporate safety and security-related protocols within the melt shop.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field (or demonstrated equivalent technical experience).
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in a melt shop, foundry, metal manufacturing, or chemistry-driven process environment, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
- Proven experience working with precious metals is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of various melting furnaces (induction, arc, gas-fired), heat-based testing equipment, casting processes, and metallurgical properties highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of inventory control, security protocols, and loss prevention strategies.
- Proficiency in utilizing ERP systems and the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant industry-specific compliance standards.
Soft Skills:
- Exceptional leadership, communication (both written and verbal), and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated high attention to detail and unwavering integrity due to the sensitive nature of the materials handled.
- Proven ability to operate effectively under pressure in a high-value, fast-paced environment, maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
Working Conditions:
- Regular exposure to high temperatures and caustic chemicals, requiring strict adherence to PPE sage and safety protocols.
- May involve periods of standing, lifting, and manual handling of materials.
- Work environment is within a secure, access-controlled facility with stringent material handling

- Hours/Travel Requirements:
- Normal business hours are 8am to 5pm Monday – Friday.
